William Penn Coach Laird Wins 1,000th Game

WIlliam Penn Head Coach Mike LairdWilliam Penn University (Iowa) head baseball coach Mike Laird won the 1,000th game of his career on Saturday as the Statesmen swept a doubleheader with Clark University, by scores of 4-3 and 9-2. The victories improve William Penn’s record to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in the Heart of America Conference.

Coach Laird entered the 2019 season — his 37th as a head coach — with a record of 981-560-3. His collegiate coaching career began at William Penn in 1983. During his tenure, the program has competed in both the NCAA and NAIA. The program ranked fourth in the NCAA in winning percentage during the 1990s.

Coach Laird’s teams have won ten conference titles, competed in nine NCAA postseason tournaments, and appeared in six NAIA postseason tournaments.

Prior to coaching in college, Coach Laird recorded an 88-58 won-loss  record as a high school coach.
