Elon University will hold its fall baseball camp on November 30 and December 1, 2019. We spoke with assistant coach Vin Redmond about what players can expect from the camp. Listen to the interview below:

Camp Location and Schedule
“The camp is held at Latham Park, which is our home ballpark at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. Elon is located between Durham and Greensboro about 45 minutes from Raleigh. The camp is for all high school baseball players, grades 9 through 12, and we also have junior college players, as well.”
“When the players in the camp, they’ll meet all the coaches there. We typically have coaches from anywhere from 8-12 colleges in our region — they’re mostly Division II, Division III, and Junior College coaches, due to the fact that because of NCAA regulations, Division I schools cannot recruit after October 13, off-campus.”
“We’ll have our Elon coaching staff there and coaches from 8-12 other schools and they’ll get a chance to chance to meet them. At that point, our strength coach will take them through a dynamic warmup and then we get into series of instructional stations — offensive, defensive, and base running — and the pitchers go meet with our pitching coach.”
“We also have some Major League scouts that have worked at the camp for a while. They come and help instruct, as well. At that point, after the instruction portion, we get into a showcase, where players are put through a pro-style showcase, which includes:
- Outfielders throwing from the outfield to third and home
- Infielders go out to their positions and take ground balls there
- Catchers go out and do some bunt throws as well pop times
After the showcase portion, each camper is put onto a team. Each team plays in two games, approximately seven inning games. POs will throw between one and three innings. They’ll face about ten hitters.”
Elon University Baseball Facilities
“Our facility is Latham Park, it’s right on campus. We have a turf infield, so rain usually isn’t an issue for us. We have two covered batting cages and we have our clubhouse all right there.”
Coaching Staff
“Elon has one of the longest-tenured coaches in the state, Mike Kennedy — he’s an Elon alum. He has over 700 wins, he played a couple of years professionally with the Oakland Athletics. He got into coaching right afterwards — a couple of years as an assistant and this is his 23rd year as a head coach.
Our recruiting coordinator and top assistant is Robbie Huffstetler. This is his 17th year at Elon. He works with the hitters and infielders and coordinates all our recruiting efforts.
Sean McGrath is our pitching coach. This will be his third year at Elon. He handles all the pitching efforts.
I work with the hitters and outfielders. And I help run the camps.”
Additional Camp Information
“It’s a great camp. They’ve been doing it for 15 years. The camp attracts a lot of top talent. There’s a lot of good coaches there, [as well as] Major League scouts there, that not only help with the evaluations, but also with the instruction, as well.
If you’re interested in Elon, it’s a great opportunity to get in front of the whole coaching staff. This is our flagship camp, so it’s great opportunity to come down and see campus on the weekend after Thanksgiving. A lot of high school kids have that time off, so it’s a good weekend to travel, as well.”
